History of American Higher Education

Last reviewed: 29 September 2026 · Editorial standards

The history of American higher education runs through a small set of founding statutes, statements, and documents. Many of this page’s original links pointed to pages that no longer exist, including its own site’s legacy content and dozens of individual faculty and university pages from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Where the original source has since been developed into a full page on this site, this page now links to that page directly rather than to a dead external address.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities

  • HBCU Coverage: The Herald-Sun Series, hosted on this site.
  • Rockefeller Archive Center, a major repository for the history of American philanthropy, including its role in the development of HBCUs. The original link to a specific finding aid on this topic is no longer available; this links to the archive’s current site.

Founding U.S. Government Documents

Higher education policy in the United States developed inside a specific constitutional and political framework. These primary documents, all hosted at USConstitution.net, provide that context.

For current legislative activity: U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.
